Key Timeline of the War

1st of September 1939 Hitler invades Poland. Two days later, Britain and France declare war on Germany.

May 1940 Germany invades and occupies France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

June 1940 Italy joins the war on the German’s side and France surrenders. Italy will remain on the side of the Axis powers until their surrender in September 1943.

July 1940 The battle of Britain begins, with German aircraft making increasing number of sorties across the channel. Britain successfully defends her shores and Hitler postpones plans to invade.

June 1941 Hitler decides to invade Russia, weighing Germany down with a war on two key fronts.

December 1941 The Japanese launch a surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, causing the US to enter the war.

June 1942 American forces win the battle of Midway, signalling a turning point in the war in the Pacific.

February 1943 The Germans surrender at Stalingrad, and later (in January 1944) will also end their ultimately unsuccessful siege of Leningrad.

6th of June 1944 The Allies land on the shores of France in an event known as the D-Day Landings. By the end of August they have made significant progress inland, liberating Paris on the 25th.

1945 In April, Russian forces reach Berlin and the battle for the city begins. Seeing imminent defeat Hitler commits suicide and a week later Germany surrenders. In August the US take the difficult decision to unleash nuclear weapons on hundreds of thousands of Japanese civilians, bringing the war in the Pacific also to an end.
